The Chicago Cubs make their biggest move of the offseason, acquiring RHP Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins in a deal that is headlined by Cubs No. 1 prospect OF Owen Caissie and includes SS Christian Hernandez (No.11) and 1B Edgardo De Leon. Cabrera finally finds his way to Chicago after being linked to the club at the 2025 trade deadline. He projects to be the number two starter behind 2025 rookie of the year runner up Cade Horton in a Cubs rotation that ranked top 10 in ERA in 2025.
Cabrera is one of the most electrifying arms in all of baseball. His fastball averages in the mid to high 90s and throws a multitude of offerings. His most used and most dangerous pitch is his change up. He throws it at an unheard of 94 mph, giving him the hardest changeup of any starter and third fastest changeup in baseball, behind Edwin Diaz and Jhoan Duran. His other offerings are also as disgusting, with all but his slider having 1.1in-4.4in more than average horizontal break.
Formerly a three-time top 100 prospect (2020-2022), Cabrera ranked as the Marlins top prospect prior to his debut in 2021 and ranked as high as 34 nationally in 2022. Cabrera has dealt with multiple injuries in his short time in the big leagues, but has been effective when healthy. He owns a career 4.07 ERA in 89 games (87 starts). But his best work came this last season where he logged a career high 26 starts and pitched to the tune of a 3.53 ERA in 137 ⅓ innings. As expected, he boasts excellent strikeout numbers, something the Cubs lacked in 2025. He punched out 150 in those 137+ innings and has 478 strikeouts in his career. He also showed significant growth in his command, limiting himself to just 48 walks on the year.
The 27-year-old gives the Cubs a controllable starter (three full seasons under team control) with the upside to be one of the best pitchers in baseball with the type of stuff he has. He was able to show that he was healthy in 2025 and can keep the walks down. Add in the Cubs’ excellent team defense and ability to get more out of their pitchers, Cabrera will be a welcome addition to the Northside as the Cubs continue to add to a talented roster that has a World Series trophy on their minds.
