The Chicago Cubs and Alex Bregman are in agreement on a 5 year, $175 million deal. The Cubs capitalize on their offseason momentum after acquiring the talented Cabrera by going out and signing a bat they have been linked to over the last 12 months.
The 31 year-old Bregman has filled his mantle piece in his career, compiling three All-Star nods, two World Series rings, a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove. Bregman has been one of the best players in the American League since his debut in 2016. The third baseman has amassed over 43 bWAR across 10 MLB seasons and will now anchor a Cubs lineup that saw 2024 offseason acquisition Kyle Tucker leave in free agency.
Bregman spent last season in Boston where the righty slashed .273/.360 /.462 in 114 games with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. Bregman signed on with Boston last offseason on a three year $120 million deal, but opted out after just one season with the Red Sox. After just missing out on the talented righty last offseason, Jed and the Cubs find a way to get their guy and will have him for the next half decade.
The Cubs prioritized pitching this offseason, with their only addition to the Major League lineup coming in Tyler Austin from oversees, but now add a top end bat to an offense that saw Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch announce their presence and calm and collected veterans Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki continue to be major contributors. Bregman's arrival gives the Cubs a 25 home run threat and much needed length to the lineup. With a window of sustained success opening, the Cubs needed to add high quality pieces to build upon the success of 2026, and with the addition of Bregman, the Cubs no doubt are ready to make a legitimate run at a World Series title.
