President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer continues to make aggressive moves to keep the Cubs' contention window open. This time, extending former 1st round pick Nico Hoerner to a six-year extension worth $141 million, making him the fourth-highest-paid second baseman in MLB history, trailing only Robinson Canó, Marcus Semien, and José Altuve.. The extension includes $10 million in deferred salary spanning the 2029–2032 seasons, a full no-trade clause, and is set to take effect next season

Since 2022, Hoerner has vaulted himself into stardom. The former Stanford star has earned a pair of Gold Gloves, stolen 123 bases, accumulated 19.6 bWAR, slashed .284/.339/.389 and owns the third best K% (10.2%) in that span. This signing comes on the heels of fellow Californian Pete Crow-Armstrong’s recent extension, signaling to fans that the front office is committed to keeping this core intact—a direct pivot from the "liquidation" of the 2016 championship core that failed to return to the Fall Classic.

Like PCA, Hoerner's hard play has earned the hearts of many Cub fans. He has played a pivotal role in the team’s recent resurgence; now, with the business side settled, Hoerner is set to anchor second base for the foreseeable future. As an essential cog in the Cubs' lineup, he remains vital to a club that now clearly has its sights set on much more than just a division title.
